Young front-row duo sign new deals

1st February 2017

Cardiff Blues are delighted to confirm new deals for front-row duo Dillon Lewis and Ethan Lewis.

In a double boost to the region, the former Wales Under-20s internationals have committed their long-term futures, following in the footsteps of the likes of Sam Warburton, Gethin Jenkins and Tom James.

Head coach Danny Wilson was pleased to secure their services and believes both have a huge amount to contribute in the coming years.

Wilson said: “It’s great to retain Dillon and Ethan, who are a key part of the Cardiff Blues pack moving forward.

“Dillon is a very good scrummaging prop, with a good all-round game and has achieved a lot of success at age-grade level.

“He has been unfortunate with injuries this season but has a big future in front of him if he continues to work hard and progress.

“Ethan’s another player we have high hopes for. He has also been unfortunate with injuries so far this season but is back fit and gives us plenty of strength in depth at hooker."

Tight-head Lewis, was a key member of the 2015 Wales Under-20s squad and made his regional debut in the LV=Cup in the same year.

One of the most highly-rated young props in Wales, Lewis has so far made 18 appearances for Wales’ Capital Region.

Lewis said: “I’m extremely happy to have signed for Cardiff Blues - having come through the development pathway here it was my dream and goal to sign my first senior contract with the region.

“There is so much experience in the front row and it’s great to learn and train with those guys, and be able to pick their brains.

“It’s been a frustrating season for me with the injuries but I’m just looking forward to getting fit and the future with Cardiff Blues.”

Hooker Lewis is another product of the regions academy system and also made his debut in 2015.

The Treorchy Comprehensive School-product went on to feature in 14 encounters last season and is back in action following shoulder surgery last year.

He added: “It was an easy decision and a no brainer when they offered me the new deal. I’m back and looking to get some game-time now.

“I’ve come through the system here and it’s a great environment to improve. There’s a lot of competition here and that’s only going to help me.

“It’s nice to have guys like Matthew Rees around for me to learn from. He’s player I grew up watching so it’s good to pick up tips from him and the experience he has.”
