Corniel van Zyl believes it is no surprise that Taine Basham has been recalled by Wales and has paid tribute to the back-row’s commitment as one of seven Cardiff Rugby stars named in Steve Tandy’s squad.
Basham won the last of his 17 caps against England in 2024, but has taken his game to a new level since arriving at the Arms Park last year.
After taking time to settle, the explosive back-rower enjoyed a scintillating end to the season and he has taken that form into 2026-27.
Van Zyl said: “He’s probably struggled a little bit in beginning to adapt to our circumstances, our picturesand stuff, which probably just pushed him back a little bit.
“He had a few niggles as well, which probably didn’t give him the best cut but game time in the beginning but when he was more comfortable towards the end of the season, he definitely found his feet in the number eight role and put in strong performances.
“Obviously, ball in hand, he is very good. It was always about the other side of the ball. If he gets that better, then I think he will ask a few more questions and no doubt, in this season’s performance, he’s been right up there.
“There’s definite improvement in his defensive efforts, which is obviously going to ask more questions with the selectors.
“It’s a more overall game, a complete game. For me personally, it’s no surprise he’s selected. He performed well and I think it’s well deserved.”
Basham is joined in the Wales squad by Rhys Barratt, Liam Belcher, Teddy Williams, Alex Mann, James Botham and Rhys Barratt.
Van Zyl confirmed Keiron Assiratti and Ben Thomas missed out due to injury but could come back into contention later, while in-form Jacob Beetham was in line to be included but has been ruled out.
He continued: “With Jake, unfortunately he got injured in that Leinster game. He went up for a high ball and then just came down in an awkward position. He’ll be out for a few weeks and will miss the autumn. It’s unfortunate for him because he was in good form.”
Another to miss out was Taulupe Faletau. The legendary number eight returned for action for the first time since March, with an impressive display against Northampton Saints.
Faletau rolled back the years yet again and Tandy admitted he came straight back into consideration and remains in the frame for the Rugby World Cup.
Van Zyl added: “Toby is obviously in a very specific place in his career. It’s more valuable to have him some games and potentially not all the games.
“So there’s good planning in place, obviously plans don’t always work out the way you want but it is good planning in place to get as much game time for him to push on and ask questions with the selector.”
