Cardiff Rugby are excited to announce the appointment of Jon Flatman as the club’s new chief executive officer.
An executive search for a new CEO was launched in August to ensure the leadership structure at Cardiff Arms Park better reflected the club’s ambition.
Flatman was the outstanding candidate in a competitive process led by the board and will join the club in January, while Jamie Muir will continue to play a key role across the business as managing director.
The 48-year-old takes charge as Cardiff Rugby navigates an important era for professional rugby in Wales and brings extensive commercial and operational leadership as well as a deep passion for the game.
He said: “Stepping into this role is a tremendous privilege and a responsibility I do not take lightly. Cardiff Rugby has such a rich history and we have big ambitions for the future.
“Rugby is more than a business, it is a lifeblood of our community and Cardiff Rugby is at the heart of it. Like every supporter, I love the game and I believe in everything Cardiff Rugby represents.
“My mandate is clear – to build a resilient commercial foundation off the pitch so we can fuel a fierce, competitive and ultimately winning team on it. There are well-documented challenges but our commitment to the club and its people is absolute.

“Taking the club back into private, independent ownership and resolving a long-term future at Cardiff Arms Park are the two major priorities, while we remain committed to building through our pathway and build clear communication with direct and accountable governance.
“I look forward to working closely with Jamie, who has done a fantastic job in testing circumstances, and standing alongside our players, staff, partners, and supporters as we build the next chapter together.”
Flatman brings a wealth of experience across professional sport and is currently CEO of Barnsley FC. He joined the Reds as chief revenue officer in 2023, overseeing a record year for commercial sales, before stepping up as interim CEO and securing the role permanently in February 2024.
During his time at Barnsley, he has also served on the English Football League board (alternate) as a representative of League One clubs, reflecting the respect he commands across the game, as well as the EFL commercial committee.
His wider experience includes consultancy work with the Rugby League World Cup and a spell as chairman of York Rugby League Football Club, where he led the club’s sale. At Barnsley, he has also played a leading role in securing long-term lease and development agreements at Oakwell Stadium.
Flatman also boasts a long association with rugby. He was a regular at Sale Sharks games at Heywood Road and played throughout school and university.
