Sherratt hoping for 'great night' against Quins

First Team News | 10th January 2024

Head coach Matt Sherratt is hoping for another ‘great night’ when his side face Harlequins in the Investec Champions Cup on Saturday.

Quins sit in second place in the English Premiership and have earnt plenty of plaudits with their brand of rugby, while Cardiff thrashed Dragons RFC on Boxing Day and have been free-scoring throughout the season.

With another sell-out crowd expected at Cardiff Arms Park and both teams known for their attacking style of rugby, Sherratt is expecting sparks to fly in the Welsh capital.

“They’re a team that I enjoy watching, I think they've got a real DNA in terms of how they play,” said Sherratt.

“It's sometimes a test of a Club, I think, is if you close your eyes, can you imagine them playing and they've got a very distinctive way of playing.

“They've got really good intent in terms of the style of play that they show off.

“There is a physicality there as well with a good set piece, and their line-out has been very good this year.

“Behind a lot of the style of play, there is an edge as well. A big thing is trying to slow them up, if you give them front foot speed of ball, they're going to hurt you.

“But going back to us playing Toulouse and Bath, we're not going to spend the week thinking about what they're going to do to us, it's what we can do to them really because we've also got players who can break a game up.

“It's more about us at home trying to put our game model onto the game and let our best players shine.

“It should be two teams that have got really good intent to play. There's always going to be a physical edge as well, so we're hoping for another great night at the Arms Park in front of another packed crowd.”

It was announced earlier this week that Tomos Williams will be moving to Gloucester at the end of the season and Sherratt admits it will be a “big loss” for Cardiff when he leaves the region.

Sherratt believes the 29-year-old has earned the right to secure a switch away from his homeland, but the Treorchy-born scrum-half’s focus firmly lies on helping the Blue and Blacks for the remainder of the season.

“He’s a brilliant player, and he’s a Cardiff player, but he’s 29 years of age and he’s earned the right to look somewhere else to have a different experience in his career,” said Sherratt.

“He’ll always be welcome back here, he’s come through the ranks, through our age grade, and he’s been at the heart of a lot of big moments at the club. It’s been a pleasure for me to see him grow.

“He’s come through with the likes of Gethin Jenkins, Gareth Anscombe and Nick Williams. He was the young pup then, snapping at their heels.

“To see him now eight years on at 29, and let’s be honest, in a season where we’ve had a little bit of adversity, he’s shown the other side of his character. He’s stepped up and led the young boys.

“It would have been so easy for the likes of him and Josh Adams to have switched off a little bit but they've been the opposite. Tommy has been somebody who's rallied the troops.

“He’s someone you want in your dressing room if you’re up against it because he’s a competitor and he’ll fight for everything.”

“He’s a big loss for the club, there’s no getting away from that. With a salary cap it's going to be very, very difficult to hold on to four, five, six top-end Welsh players because ultimately there's no money left for the rest.

“We wish him all the best and I know he’s going to finish well for us because he’s a good character.”
