I’m pleased to come away with something – Sherratt

Matt Sherratt was pleased to claim a point in Perpignan following a challenging week but believes it could and probably should have been more.

The Blue & Blacks were unable to convert a number of opportunities in the first-half as the Catalan outfit edged into a 10-3 lead.

Tomasso Allen scored all of their first-half points and crossed for the decisive try on the stroke of half-time.

Cardiff battled back in the second-half with Rey Lee-Lo powering over and then making the decisive play to set up a second, finished by Johan Mulder.

But it was not enough to overhaul the hosts, who clung on for a hard-fought victory at Stade Aime Giral.

Sherratt said: “I’m pleased to come away with something, but a little bit disappointed because if we’d taken our chances, there was an opportunity to get four points there today.

“We were pretty close in the first half to scoring two or three more tries.

“In the second half, it was about trying to stay fairly structured and go back to our systems in the 22.

“It was a tough week. We had Corey Domachowski, Thomas Young and Taulupe Faletau drop out with knocks and then we picked up a fair few knocks today, so it is testing our squad depth.

“So reflecting on our preparation and people coming in late, it’s a point earned but probably disappointed we left it so late to get the win. If we could have been a little more accurate, especially in the 22, the last few minutes are irrelevant.”

Following three rounds of European action, Cardiff remain third in Pool A, on seven points.

They face Connacht in the final round of pool stage action, at the Arms Park on Saturday (8pm).

Sherratt added: “We’ve got Connacht at home next week, so that’s a big game for us. If we want a home knock-out game we need to beat Connacht to have a chance of that.

“It makes next week even more important. We have got two points now from our trips to France and five points from our home game against the Cheetahs, so we need to back that up next week at home to a good Connacht side.”
