Over 240 girls from across the region came together this week for the Cardiff Rugby Community Foundation U14s Girls Crossfield 7s Tournament, with 20 teams representing 15 schools competing in a fantastic celebration of girls’ rugby.
Hosted across a full day of action-packed fixtures, the festival provided young players with the opportunity to represent their schools in a competitive and enjoyable tournament environment. With schools travelling from throughout the region to take part, the event once again highlighted the growing popularity and strength of the girls’ game at grassroots level.
The tournament featured a series of pool matches throughout the morning before teams progressed into the knockout stages, with both the Cup and Plate competitions producing exciting finales.
In the Plate competition, Garth Olwg and Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Cwm Rhondda contested an incredibly close final after impressive performances throughout the day. In a dramatic finish, YGG Cwm Rhondda secured victory through a golden try to claim the Plate title.
The Cup final saw Ferndale take on Bryn Celynnog after both schools impressed during the group stages and semi-finals. Bryn Celynnog produced a dominant performance in the final to secure a convincing victory and lift the 7s Tournament Cup.
“There’s been huge talent down here today,” said Community Manager Bronnie Jones.
“A lot of girls who may not regularly play rugby have come down to participate and try the game, and there’s been some immense talent on show throughout the day.
“I think especially over the last year, the game has grown massively. We’re now able to run events like this with 15 schools and 20 teams involved, with some schools even bringing multiple teams. It’s just immense.”
“As a Foundation, we want to improve opportunities for everyone across the region, especially within girls’ rugby. If we can make this an annual event that continues to grow year on year, then we’ll be really happy.
“There were over 200 girls involved here today, but we know it can become even bigger and better. We’re really excited to see how the event grows over the next few years.”
Events such as this would not be possible without the dedication and support of teachers, coaches, volunteers, match officials, schools, and families who continue to provide opportunities for young players to enjoy and develop through rugby.
Congratulations to all teams involved for their efforts throughout another outstanding festival of girls’ rugby.
