All to play for in the European Challenge Cup

First Team News | 13th January 2020

It is still all to play for in the European Challenge Cup ahead of Saturday’s clash with Rugby Calvisano at the Arms Park (13:00)

Cardiff Blues can still qualify for the knockout stages of the competition and must secure a maximum points victory over the Italian outfit to keep their hopes alive.

The Blues would then require favours from Leicester Tigers and London Irish, who face Pau and the Scarlets respectively, to qualify as one of the three best runners up.

Leicester, who claimed a 30-20 victory over Cardiff Blues on Sunday, travel to France and if they can make it clean sweep in Pool 5, then the Blues will finish second.

Should Pau claim a pair of bonus-points and Cardiff Blues secure five-points, they will be level on match points and it will come down to aggregate match-points from the two encounters between the sides, which the Blues edge.

If Cardiff Blues finish second in Pool 5, they will then be reliant upon London Irish beating the Scarlets, or at least denying the west Walians a winning bonus-point.

If the Scarlets are triumphant but without a bonus-point it will then come down to points difference, with the Llanelli-based club currently possessing a slender four-point advantage.
