Razors will be at the ready at Parc y Scarlets on Tuesday (30th November) when men from across Wales will be saying goodbye to the beloved facial hair they have sprouted all in the name of charity.

Throughout the month of November men in Wales have been showing their support for Grow a Grav, a campaign in tribute to the Welsh rugby legend Ray Gravell and his famous facial hair.

The campaign has been raising money for the Welsh Rugby Players’ Association (WRPA) Benevolent Trust and the Ray Gravell and Friends Charitable Trust and as a thank you the WRPA, with help from Ray’s home region the Scarlets, will be holding the great Grav Off between 6.30pm – 9pm for those who have supported Grow a Grav.

The ‘Grav off’ will be a night of fundraising and fun giving supporters the chance to compare gravs, raise money for the cause and meet their favourite rugby stars

Tickets are free and everyone is welcome, to register people need to send their name to growagrav@wrpa.co.uk.

Chairman of the WRPA Rhys Williams said, “We are so pleased with the way that the Welsh public have supported Grow a Grav. It is a great campaign in honour of a true Welsh patron and we hope that the Grav Off will be a fitting way of rounding off the month.”

Ray Gravell passed away in October 2007, aged 56. A former Llanelli, Wales and British Lions rugby player, Grav played during the most successful period in Welsh rugby’s history, when he became known for his trademark beard and his powerful charges from midfield. His fame became even greater after he retired from playing in 1985 and embarked on an acting and broadcasting career which made him one of the best known faces and voices in the country.

The WRPA Benevolent Fund was set up in March 2010 with a £10,000 donation made by Team Wales to establish the Trust. The Trust hopes to be able to help players in need whether it is through financial aid, guidance or support.

Established in memory of one of Wales’ greatest ambassadors, The Ray Gravell and Friends Charitable Trust supports causes and individuals in west Wales that would have been close to Grav’s heart. Its aim is to ensure that the passion, energy and spirit of this great man continues through the work it does – protecting his love of and commitment to family life, sport, music, the arts, the outdoors, media and the Welsh language.
