Sun Shines on Junior Coaching Courses

16th April 2003

The Spring Sun came out for the junior coaching courses last week, as over one hundred children attended the Easter holiday activities.

On Tuesday 15th April Capital Rugby Director John Huw Williams, Academy Coaches Mike Rayer and Howard Stone, plus first team players Rob Appleyard, Gary Powell and members of the Under-21 squad led the course. Juniors wer split into small groups to receive deicated coaching and the benefit of many years of rugby playing experience.

All kinds of different training activities were staged, from goal kicking to tackling and passing exercises and TAG rugby matches.

Gareth Hugo, 10, from Fairwater in Cardiff really did enjoy himself. "Its been brilliant today, its great to learn from such famous people as Mike Rayer and Rob Appleyard."

Capital Rugby director, John Huw Williams, was delighted with the number of children that attended. “We knew there had been great demand for places on the course, but we had a really busy morning with so many children.”

Of course, John was not complaining, “It was great to see so many children learning about and playing rugby together. Thanks to all the parents for bringing their children down to the club, and we also appreciated having the players helping out.”

On Wednesday, Junior Blue & Blacks aged 11-16 arrived at the club to take part in the second coaching course of the holidays, as the Arms Park was basked in Sun again.

On both days the children and the coaches were certainly thankful to Brecon Carreg for the water bottles that they supplied. Mike Rayer explained "Its so hot out there, its important that the children take on water regularly to avoid dehydration. We are working them all hard today, but they seem to be learning a lot and really enjoying themselves."

After the courses had finished every junior received a BlackHorse certificate for their efforts and most made their way down to the shop to take advantage of the £5 off voucher they all received.
