A 10 strong Cardiff Tag Team, chosen from the local Under 11s, traveled to Italy to play Calvisano on Saturday in their first away game of the competition, after getting off to a winning start against Leeds at half time during the Blues Heineken Cup victory over Leeds Tykes.
As guests of honor, the young players shared the BluesÂ’ hospitality at Calvisano and they were the official flag bearers as the playersÂ’ run out. The Cardiff Tag under 11Â’s won by 15 point to 10 in an entertaining match.
Speaking before the team left Councillor Nigel Howells, Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture said: “Cardiff’s youngsters travel to Italy as part of this initiative to unite young people across Europe under the umbrella of rugby. It will be even more exciting for them to be involved in Jonah Lomu’s first game for the Blues, and we hope to be celebrating a double success for the city on December 10. The teamwork between Sport.Cardiff; Cardiff Blues; and the ERC has brought success, and is an ideal template for future Heineken Cup games.”
The Tag Rugby initiative, organized by the Cardiff Blues, Sport.Cardiff, the sports development unit of Cardiff Council and the ERC (European Rugby Cup) has been set up to promote Cardiff as the host city for this seasonÂ’s Heineken Cup final on Saturday 20 May. Rugby fans can get tickets for the final and support the Blues by buying them through the Cardiff Blues website on or by calling the ticket office on 029 2030 2030 by December 31st

It was great to see the Cardiff Tag Rugby team selected from the DC Thomas squad emulating the senior side and winning against Leeds and everyone at the Cardiff Blues wishes them well in Italy. “
The Tag TeamÂ’s next outing will be at the final Pool game in Leeds on the weekend of January 21.
