Ellis Jenkins insists consistency will be key to the continued progression of Cardiff Blues.
Wales’ capital region are battling for a top six finish in the Guinness PRO12 following four consecutive wins and they have now notched up eight triumphs from 12 matches since the turn of the year.
They have also scored more points than any other team in the league and are equal with Glasgow Warriors on tries scored but a run of six defeats at the start of the season could be costly.
That is where flanker Jenkins eyes improvement and he is confident the Blues are both heading in the right direction and can bring the good times back to BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park if they find consistency through a campaign.
He said: “We have shown in patches what we can do, we have beaten Ulster, Munster, Scarlets and Connacht, and all of these teams have been top two or three when we’ve done it.
“On the flip side we have gone to teams at the other end of the table and lost so that’s the real improvement we need to make, being able to perform consistently.
“As the season’s gone on we’ve done that more and with the players we have coming in hopefully we can really get back to where Cardiff Blues should be in the league.
“From a fan’s point of view in any sport it can be tough and you have to sympathise with them. They are paying money to watch and sometimes the product they pay for isn’t good enough – especially when you’re supporting a team that’s not performing to where you are used to.
“But lots of our fans have stayed and there’s been a lot of talk that everyone is looking forward to next year.
“Success on the field is the only and best way to bring fans in and hopefully we can do our bit.”
Jenkins is relishing the influx of talent coming into Danny Wilson’s squad, in particular fellow back-row Nick Williams who joins from Ulster in the summer.
And with the players already available at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park combined with the summer recruits, the 22-year-old is optimistic for the future.
He added: “There are big names coming in and big potential for our squad. With the players we have, take Dan Fish for example who has really come into his own this year, hopefully we can start to build a squad that is really competitive.
“Nick Williams - It will be a lot better playing with him rather than against him. He was the PRO12 player of the year a few times and when you play Ulster he is always the player you look at and need to contain.
“It will be nice to have him doing his thing for us rather than against us.”
But there is still plenty to play for this season with a must win clash with the Ospreys on Judgement Day IV up next before a season finale at Edinburgh.
Following defeats for both the Scots and Munster last weekend, the Blues are now just one point off sixth and consecutive wins could be enough to secure top tier European rugby.
