It was with much pride and satisfaction that the Coaches, Officers and Parents of the two Cardiff Schools squads witnessed a close, hard fought game.
The most appropriate words heard this morning were from our retiring President Mr Cyril Evans, who said “ in a week when many lurid headlines have been written about our Junior game in Wales, what a pity those journalists were not present to see this encounter”. The skills, commitment and sheer determination of each side were evident in a cleanly fought contest.
The first half was a nervy affair with little give by either side with the first team dominating territorially and the ‘A’ side showing a dogged determination. The stalemate was broken mid way through the half with a well-worked try on the left wing by Blue Andrews.
Ten minutes into the second half an incisive break by the ‘A’s almost brought a try but the tackle which stopped the move earned a yellow card for the firsts. The resultant penalty which followed saw Tom Lloyd forcing himself over to equal the scores. Move followed move in the second half which saw both sides coming close to breaking the deadlock, but the firsts inched ahead with a penalty by Outside Half , Diggy Bird. Either side could have won the game with a score but with seconds left the first team worked the ball well down the right flank played the ball inside for Ioan Mortimer to score with the final move of the game.
If only all Junior rugby were played with the same spirit!
