Williams hopes for another giant-killing as he prepares for 150th appearance

19th October 2017

Lloyd Williams hopes to pull off another French giant-killing on Friday, as he is set to make his 150th appearance for Cardiff Blues against Toulouse in the second round of European Challenge Cup action.

The scrum half returns to the matchday squad and is named on the bench for the clash at Stade Ernest Wallon, having sat out of last week’s bonus point win over Lyon.

Williams, who names European wins over Toulon and Racing 92 among the highlights of his time at Cardiff Arms Park, is looking forward for another opportunity to upset the odds against the four-time Heineken Cup winners this weekend.

“I’ll be really honoured to have my 150th cap for the region, but it will be even better if we get the win,” said Williams.

“I’m chuffed to get that milestone on the weekend and want to enjoy my time here, so I’m glad I finally got there.

“The Toulon home game stands out, when they were top of their game. That was huge for us. We’re a tight bunch of boys here and I remember it being a brilliant game, so that one sticks out for me.

“There’s been plenty of highlights over the years and they’re all memorable for me. There’s a lot of memories. My first European match was against Racing Metro, which was huge as well.

“I’ve had some pretty big games which I’ve been lucky to be involved in and hopefully that can continue with another French victory this weekend. Hopefully there will be plenty of these opportunities to come.”

Williams, who is currently in his ninth season at Cardiff Blues, made his debut for the region against Leinster in 2010.

The Welsh international is confident his side can match their opponents on Friday, despite the physical challenge ahead.

Williams said: “The boys started the competition well and we just want to carry that on now. Momentum has built from the Dragons game and we hope to continue that this weekend leading into two big Guinness PRO14 after.

“It’s non-stop for us at the minute but they’re great challenges and games you want to be involved in as a player.

“French teams are renowned to be strong at home and Toulouse are one of the best teams around, sitting towards the top of their league, which speaks for itself, so we’ll have to be on top of our game to have a chance.

“We know they’re a big side, and across the board are probably bigger than us, but there’s different ways of winning a game of rugby so we’ll look to take that away from them and run them off their feet as soon as we can.

“We’ve got a lot of boys who are quite happy to play the full 80, and we like to throw the ball around as people have seen lately.”
