Corniel van Zyl says there’s plenty of excitement in camp this week as the Blue and Blacks prepare to welcome Connacht Rugby to the Arms Park .

With a number of players currently sidelined, Cardiff have bolstered their squad with a pair of short-term signings – Osian Roberts from Sale Sharks and Will Rigg from Exeter Chiefs – both of whom have already joined training.

“We managed to have a short-term solution in terms of getting those boys in,” explained Van Zyl.

“Osian Roberts has come in from Sale and Will Rigg from Exeter Chiefs. They actually trained with us today (Thursday), which really helped our preparations.”

The duo, both centres, bring a mix of youthful energy and proven physicality to the backline.

“Osian played for Wales U20s, mostly at outside centre,” Van Zyl added.

“He’s very strong defensively and just eager to play – at that age he just wants to get stuck in, which is great to see.”

“Will is a big, fast centre who can play both 12 and 13. He’s got good experience already from his time at Coventry before moving to Exeter, where he made a big impact with his attacking runs. He’s a powerful ball-carrier and gives us that momentum you sometimes need.”

Van Zyl said both players made a strong impression in their first session and will continue to be integrated into the squad structure over the coming weeks.

“They trained well in their first run-out and have fitted in nicely. We’re excited to see what they can bring to the group.”

Building on Positives, Aiming Higher

Reflecting on last weekend’s performance against Munster, Corniel van Zyl praised the teams fighting spirit and attacking rugby, as they came agonisingly close to claiming a first win at Thomond Park.

Van Zyl said there were encouraging signs, particularly the team’s resilience in the closing stages, but stressed the need to make the most of scoring opportunities.

“I must say, the two points at the end, where we were in those last ten minutes, I think anyone would have taken that,” he said. “But we had chances in the first half to get more points, and that’s an area we can improve.

“It was pleasing to see us score while down to 14 men, but we want to make sure we capitalise when the opportunities are there.”

Cardiff now turn their focus to Connacht – a side that boasts a strong record against Cardiff, and a refreshed coaching setup this season.

“It’s a big challenge, but we’re focused on doing our thing, growing as a team and making our supporters proud.”

“They’ve got a few new coaching staff members and you can already see a shift in their style,” noted Van Zyl. “We played them three times last year and didn’t manage to get a win, so we’ll definitely be looking to turn that around.

Injury Update

The squad will be without Ben Thomas, who continues to serve his suspension, while Rory Thornton faces an extended spell on the sidelines after picking up a significant hamstring injury.

“Rory will be out for more than ten weeks – it’s quite a decent tear,” confirmed Van Zyl. “We’ve also had a few knocks in training and towards the end of the last game, so we’re a bit stretched in certain areas.

“But that also opens opportunities for other players to step up, which is always exciting to see.”

There was some good news regarding Harri Millard, who has been cleared of any serious internal damage following a heavy tackle.

“Initially we were worried about possible organ damage, but thankfully that’s all clear now,” said Van Zyl. “It’s just about managing his pain and recovery from here.”

Looking Ahead

Despite the injury challenges, Van Zyl believes the squad’s energy and commitment remain high heading into Saturday’s clash with Connacht.

“It’s tough when you lose players, but every challenge brings an opportunity,” he said. “The new boys have come in with great enthusiasm, and the group is determined to build on what we’ve shown so far.”
