Ben Thomas was delighted to snatch a last-gasp bonus-point try as Cardiff downed Benetton Rugby on Saturday.

The utility back, who switched from full-back to fly-half after Jarrod Evans was helped off in the first half, had already kicked two penalties when he popped up in support to cross during injury time.

It put the icing on the cake in a gritty performance, in which the Italians had their fair share of chances.

But Thomas was pleased with his side’s commitment and resolve to secure the five-point victory.

He said: “We’ve started inconsistently all season but generally when we start well we tend to go on and win the game. So a good start was massive for us. It helped having the wind behind us in the first half too.

“It was a tough game to manage in those conditions, so I was lucky that I got a bit of time with the wind in the first half. When we were against the wind, it was over to Lloyd!

“The whole of the last 10 minutes was just carnage. The ball was bouncing everywhere, it was end-to-end and everyone was blowing.

“But luckily we managed to get the bonus point try which was massive for us, table-wise, but also for the morale of the squad.

“It’s a tough time at the moment so to come out of that game with a bonus point win has put some smiles on faces.”

The victory was also a fitting celebration for Lloyd Williams who became the club’s record appearance maker in the professional era.

Williams surpassed Taufa’ao Filise’s 255,and has now pulled on the blue and black more times than anyone else solely in the professional game, and Thomas believes it is just reward for a stalwart of the club.

He added: “The main thing that’s impressive about Lloyd is his standards. To play 256 games is amazing, full stop but to play that many games and maintain such a high level of performance is outstanding.

“Throughout the week, he’s always the one leading standards and he very rarely puts in a bad kick or a bad pass. He’s kept that going for what probably feels like about 25 years in the pro game!”
