Sherratt pleased as Cardiff turn on the style to complete Dragons double

First Team News | 26th December 2023

Matt Sherratt was thrilled as Cardiff ran riot with a nine-try Boxing Day demolition of the Dragons.

The Blue and Blacks were in seven heaven at half-time as Rhys Carre (2), Tomos Williams (2), James Botham (2) and Ben Thomas all crossed.

It left a sold out 12,000 Arms Park crowd in awe during a feast of running rugby.

Cardiff added two more after the break through Keiron Assiratti and Cam Winnett and Sherratt was pleased to see his side sign off 2023 in style.

He said: ”I've been in rugby long enough to know that first halves don't often go like that so you have to enjoy these moments.

“It's not something that, if I'm honest, we thought would happen. There's been a history of one score games against the Dragons. Certainly since I've been back here, they're a dogged team.

“They're a good team as well, they've had a bad day today. The little things went for us in terms of ball sticking, as we've said, and it was the opposite for them.

“The message before the game, we've shown flashes this season, a good 15 minutes, a good 20 minutes, a good 50 minutes. So that was the message to the players really.

“We related it actually back to Geraint Thomas this week. He talked about just being in the moment and not thinking of the end or thinking of the result, just trying to get to the top of the next hill.

“That's all we talked about this week really is just making sure that it's not a derby against the Dragons, it's just the next game and as an example it's the next scrum, it's the next line out, not to get too carried away with it.

“Obviously because there's I think about 15, 16 wins against the Dragons (18) but genuinely we've never spoken about that as a group because if you get caught up in all of that you can kind of take your eye off the ball a little bit.”
