Peter Thomas leads tributes to Warburton

29th December 2017

Cardiff Blues chairman Peter Thomas has led the tributes to Sam Warburton after the star flanker was given an OBE in the New Year's honours list.

The 29-year-old has been awarded an Officers of the Order of the British Empire for services to rugby.

During an illustrious career Warburton has made 106 appearances for his home region, is Wales’ most capped captain and has led the British & Irish Lions on two tours.

Thomas said: “We are thrilled for Sam and he fully deserves this great honour for all he has done for our sport.

“From day one he has set the standard as a professional rugby player of the highest quality. His leadership, his preparation, his drive and the development of his game, in particular at the contact area and skillset, sets him apart.

“On the pitch his ability is unquestionable and off the field his contribution to the community and various charities has never wavered. Sam will engage with all ages and all levels of society, giving the most important thing, his time.

“We have been privileged to have Sam at Cardiff Blues both as a player but also an ambassador. He is a true Cardiffian and we are very proud of all of his achievements.”

Warburton is currently sidelined due to knee surgery, with a recovery period of four to six months, meaning he will miss the remainder of the season.

Cardiff Blues chief executive Richard Holland added: “Sam, whether on the pitch or off it is a credit to himself and the region.

“His achievements speak for themselves and we are very much looking forward to seeing him back on the pitch in a Cardiff Blues jersey in the near future.”
