Winger Harri Millard was relieved to get a bonus point win over Dragons RFC after a hard-fought contest at the Arms Park.
The visitors started and finished the game strongly, but Cardiff dominated in the middle stages, running in four tries as they registered a 19th consecutive league win over the men of Gwent.
Millard praised the performance of the Dragons, and although acknowledging his side were rusty after the international break, saw it as a ‘job done’ to come away with five points.
“The last 20 minutes of the game let us down, but after the game we said, we’ve had five weeks without a game, and got five points at home, so it’s job done really,” said Millard.
“I think you have to credit the Dragons as well. I think they came out firing and it was tough having five weeks without a game, missing that match intensity.
“We wanted to come out of the blocks firing, but to be fair, the Dragons matched it and probably even got the better over us at first. Then in the middle of the game, I think we dominated.
“There were probably a little too many errors after the part where we dominated, which brought them back into the game and to be fair to them, they showed a lot of energy in the last 20 minutes, which we lacked.
“But it’s tough because, when you’re 31-9 up, you’re thinking the game’s in your hands, and one error can put them back in the game.”
Millard scored Cardiff’s second try of the game, cutting inside to beat several Dragons defenders.
“It wasn’t Ben Thomas’ best pass, but he found the space, put me into it and luckily I just stepped inside and things opened up for me. Luckily one step beat them all.
The versatile back has been plagued by injuries in recent years, but is optimistic he has put them behind him and can have a run of good health.
“Well, I’m hoping for an injury-free season, that would be nice. And then hopefully that comes with a run of games then.”
Millard praised the performance of winger Josh Adams after his return from a long-term injury, and full back Cam Winnett, who was named player of the match.
“Josh brings a lot of experience,” added Millard. “He talks well. The squad’s still quite young, so he’s very good with those boys and just the confidence that he instils in the team. It’s great to have him back.
“I’d love to know how many defenders Cam beat tonight. I think every time he caught the ball he at least beat one. He was on fire tonight to be fair to him.”
