Tom Bowen hailed Cardiff’s defensive resilience after the Blue & Blacks recorded a historic 0-26 victory over the Ospreys at St Helen’s on Saturday night, securing a first-ever away win, and the Ospreys first-ever home loss, at the venue while keeping their Welsh rivals scoreless.
The winger was at the heart of an impressive first-half display, crossing twice to help Cardiff establish a commanding 0-19 advantage at the interval. Cardiff added a further score after the break to complete a memorable shutout on the Ospreys’ second outing at their new home.
Despite the emphatic scoreline, Bowen was quick to acknowledge the challenge posed by the hosts, particularly their formidable driving maul, which tested Cardiff’s defensive organisation throughout the contest.
“It’s not easy. I think the boys are going to be proud of their efforts tonight. It’s a tough place to come, Ospreys away, especially with how powerful their maul is. They had us in our 22 for a while at one point, and to keep them out is a testament to the boys really,” he said.
Cardiff’s attacking work also came to the fore, with Bowen particularly pleased to see the team’s preparation during the week translate onto the pitch.
“To score a try off a first-phase strike, that’s what we practise in the week. For it to pay off in an actual game is pleasing.”
The victory was built on a collective defensive effort, with Cardiff repeatedly holding the Ospreys up over the line and finding ways to turn pressure into possession.
Bowen explained that the defensive performance provided the team with energy, particularly during periods when the hosts threatened to get back into the contest.
“Our defence was giving us energy as a team. We were keeping them out, holding them up over the line numerous times and getting that ball back in their red zone.
“We went into the changing rooms with our tails up, and the message was that we’ve got to keep on going and finish them off.”
That message was delivered emphatically after the interval, with Cardiff producing another disciplined defensive display to deny the Ospreys throughout the second half.
The hosts had enjoyed a prolific outing the previous week against the Dragons, making Cardiff’s achievement all the more significant. Bowen admitted that keeping a side of their physical quality scoreless on home soil was something the squad could take considerable satisfaction from.
“It doesn’t happen often. To nil them on their home patch, in front of their crowd tonight, we’ve got to take real positives from that.”
The result also provided a fitting conclusion to a demanding block of fixtures for the Blue & Blacks, with Bowen describing the derby triumph as the perfect way to round off a challenging period.
“it’s been a tough block, to be fair. With some real tough games in there. To win in the derby tonight tops it off really nicely.”
Beyond the collective performance, the winger was also keen to highlight the contributions of his fellow young players, singling out the work of the forwards and the performances of the players in the middle of the park.
He reserved particular praise for the likes of Steff Emanuel, whose contribution in both attack and defence has continued to catch the eye, as well as the wider group of young players establishing themselves at senior level.
“I don’t think those boys in the middle get enough credit. Someone like Steff, who’s still young, in the thick of things in defence and attack, the way he performed tonight was outstanding.”
With several young players sharing similar experiences and progressing through the ranks together, Bowen believes Cardiff’s emerging group has plenty to be encouraged by.
“Matty Young, Tom Howe, Osian Darwin-lewis, me and Steff – we’ve all come through together. For us to be playing in a Welsh derby, we’ve got to take that as a real positive. We’re all youngsters playing at the highest level we can play at.”
For Cardiff, the 26-point victory represents more than just another derby success. A first win at St Helen’s, a clean sheet against their regional rivals and an impressive individual contribution from Bowen combined to make it a night to remember for the travelling Blue & Blacks.
