Blues Triumph in East v West Derby Clash

14th September 2005

Cardiff Blues beat the Scarlets 20-16 with tries from two former Scarlets players Mike Phillips and Walkabout Man of the Match Andy Powell.

The Scarlets scored first with a penalty from fly half Mike Hercus. Nicky Robinson was unlucky not to equalise when his long range effort bounced off the upright.

However the Blues did not have to wait long before getting points on the scoreboard. When the Scarlets lost the ball inside their own half Mike Phillips showed excellent football skills to fly hack the ball and keep it under control. He beat Scarlets winger Aisea Havilli to the line to score against his old region. Robinson added the conversion.

Nicky Robinson kicked a penalty but a period of pressure followed for the Blues with Barry Davies unlucky when his half way line penalty kick hit the Blues post. Following a Matthew Watkins break, the Scarlets entrenched themselves on the Blues try line but the defence stood firm. When the Scarlets were awarded a penalty in their own half, Barry Davies attempted another long range effort but was unlucky once again when the ball bounced off the upright. The teams went it for the break with the scores: Cardiff Blues 10 Llanelli Scarlets 3.

The Scarlets started the second half with a try when substitute winger Paul Mackie scored in the corner. However the Blues response was excellent. A superb cross field kick from Robinson was tapped down by Craig Morgan in to the hands of former Scarlets back row man, Andy Powell. The big number 8 raced over the line to score against his old team mates. Robinson added the conversion. Gareth Bowen scored a penalty for the Scarlets with Nicky Robinson replying with a neat drop goal to bring the score to Blues 20 Scarlets 11. With the Scarlets choosing to go for a try rather than a kick at goal and a chance of a bonus point the last minutes of the game were played in the Blues 22. The defence was gritty and looked as if they had kept the visitors out, however in the last minute the Scarlets eventually scored when winger Lee Burne went over in the corner. The final whistle went with the score Cardiff Blues 20 Llanelli Scarlets 16 much to the delight of the home fans.
