Thomas Young’s stunning try-saving intervention against DHL Stormers has earned him October’s Defender of the Month award.

The award, sponsored by Land Rover, was launched at the start of the 22/23 season to celebrate the very best defensive moments of the campaign.

After earning 46 per cent of the public vote, Young follows fellow back row, James Botham, in picking up the award.

With 58 minutes on the clock, and the defending champions looking to regain the lead at Cardiff Arms Park, Hacjivah Dayimani broke away dangerously and looked destined for the whitewash.

However, Young - assisted by Tomos Williams - made a last-ditch tackle to prevent the score, using his strength - and the tips of his fingers - to hold the ball up. It was a turning point in the clashas Cardiff went on to secure a thrilling 30-24 victory against the South Africa outfit.

Young was closely followed by scrum-half Williams, whose own hold up on Leigh Halfpenny in the away win over Scarlets earned 28 per cent of the vote.

Josh Turnbull and Max Llewellyn were also nominated for impactful tackles against Stormers and Dragons respectively.

Young has impressed on both sides of the ball since his summer return to Cardiff, sitting amongst the league leaders for defensive contributions and scoring two tries in six outings.
