WREX make donation to #StayStrongForOws

19th March 2015

Cardiff Blues players Alex Cuthbert and Cory Allen were on hand to receive a special donation to the #StayStrongForOws fund at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

WREX was set-up by the Welsh Former International Players Association to provide fundraising events for the Welsh Former International Players Benevolent Fund.

The recognised charity provides help to former internationals after their rugby playing days in forms of medical help or even financial hardships.

WREX has already helped a considerable number of players who have experienced ill health or rugby related injuries that would require medical assistance.

Officials from the charity made a major donation of £25,000 to the #StayStrongForOws fund following the Wales international this weekend, with a cheque presentation made to star duo Cuthbert and Allen on behalf of Cardiff Blues.

The money will now go towards injured player Owen Williams. Owen continues to make progress at Rookwood Hospital in Cardiff after suffering a serious injury playing for the region last year.

Meanwhile, a special #StayStrongForOws Quiz held in the marquee at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park raised over £2,200 for the fund.

Players from the Cardiff Blues joined quiz teams on the night for the event hosted by Rick O’Shea, with money raised through a raffle and ticket sales.

Helen Davies, Player & Family Liaison Manager at Cardiff Blues, said: “It’s fantastic to see so much fundraising and events taking place to raise awareness and funds for #StayStrongForOws.

“Over 250 people took part in the quiz at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park and had a fantastic night. Our thanks go to our quiz master Rick O’Shea, Spiros Fine Dining, Heineken and Genero Productions for helping us stage this event.

“The major donation from WREX is a huge boost and we thank the charity for its generosity in helping Owen.

“We still have many more events coming up this year, with the Cardiff to Paris Bike Ride in June a major focal point. The last few places are available so keen supporters who would like to get on their bike for this special event should contact me for more details.”
