Women begin defence with 10-try victory

Women | 8th January 2024

Cardiff Rugby Women’s Under-18’s season got off to a winning start in the Regional Age-Grade Championship with a comfortable 56-5 victory over RGC DU on Sunday.

The defending champions ran 10 tries as they routed their north Walian counterparts at Ystrad Mynach’s Centre for Sporting Excellence.

The Blue & Blacks were quick out of the blocks with two tries inside the opening seven minutes from Seren Thomas and Seren Lockwood.

Cardiff were able to dominate the breakdown and overpower the RGC defence and after further tries from Madeline Jones and Seren Lockwood were up 31-0 before the twenty minute mark.

Co-captain Shanelle Williams then finished off a fantastically well worked set-piece from a lineout to boulder past five defenders and find the try line.

RGC were able to apply some pressure with controlled kicking, but Cardiff defended well and after Jones added her second try, were leading 41-0 with ten minutes remaining in the first half.

Unfortunately for Cardiff, their defence was soon broken with RGC managing to take advantage of their first sustained period of pressure in Cardiff’s 22 with a try of their own.

That was not the end of the first half action however, as Shanelle Williams punctuated the referee’s whistle with another powerful drive to the line to end the half 46-5.

The second half proved to be a much more even game as RGC upped their performance and a few handling errors crept into the Cardiff attack.

Cardiff were able to add to their impressive first-half haul through two quick fire tries from Riley Stanger and Meg Jones and finished as 56-5 winners in their opening game of the competition.
