Women’s Rugby in the Blues Region

If you fancy trying your hand at women’s rugby, there is an active club scene in the Blues region.

Llandaff North, in Cardiff are the largest club and winners of both the 2004 WWRU National League and Cup. Their strength in depth allows them to field teams in both the first and second division, with further squads active at U16 and U13 level.

Cardiff HSOB based Cardiff Quins also hold a place in Division 1, led by 44 times-capped Nadine Griffiths.

Currently on top of the South Division 1 league (as of Friday 25th February) are the dynamic Pontyclun outfit. Following a year playing in conjunction with West Wales club Tycroes, they have come back with real strength as a single club.

Also in Division 1 are the well-established Tylorstown. With players feeding in from the Treorchy and Cefn Coed junior clubs, the west valleys area is a thriving women’s rugby stronghold.

The Division 2 UWIC side play a key role as a talent breeding ground for the game. As universities continue to be a vital means of introducing women to the sport, a number of players have come through UWIC into the ranks of international rugby.

Finally, under the guidance of East region coach, Miff Connelly, Barry Girls RFC is rapidly developing girls’ rugby in the Vale of Glamorgan area.
