Winnett signs new Cardiff contract

First Team News | 15th January 2024

Cam Winnett has pledged his future to Cardiff by extending his contract with the club.

The 21-year-old full-back has enjoyed a breakthrough season in Blue and Black, having penned his first senior contract in the summer.

Such has been the impact the former Wales Under-20 star has made, he has now signed a long-term extension at the Arms Park.

Cardiff head coach Matt Sherratt was delighted to secure the services of the pathway product and has been hugely impressed with his progress this season.

He said: “We are delighted to have extended Cam beyond the end of his existing contract.  It signals our intent of not only retaining our best young players but also extending the lads that we want to build the club around.

“Cam has been excellent so far this season. He is a really good person and professional which has shown in the consistency of his performances.”

Winnett made a try-scoring first-team debut against Harlequins in 2021, while the majority of the senior squad were in Covid-19 quarantine.

He went on to make three further first-team appearances, while starring for Wales Under-20s and Cardiff RFC, but it is in the current campaign that the former Treorchy man has established himself.

Winnett has featured in all 11 fixtures this season, including 10 starts, scoring two tries and equipping himself with aplomb. His impressive form and maturity beyond his years has received widespread plaudits from across the game.

Having progressed from Treorchy RFC, into the Cardiff age-grade set-up and right through the pathway, he is now thrilled to commit to his home club.

Winnett said: “This is a really proud moment for myself and my family and I am so grateful to everyone who has helped me get to this point in my career.

“To sign a long-term contract with a club I love and grew up supporting is amazing and I couldn’t be any happier.

“The season has been going well for me so far, I am really grateful for the opportunities I have been given by the coaches, I am loving the way we are playing and it’s just a really enjoyable group to be part of.

“I am still learning every day, I’m working hard on and off the field and enjoying every moment wearing the Cardiff badge on my chest.”
