Wilson withdraws from Wales tour

3rd May 2017

Cardiff Blues can confirm Danny Wilson has withdrawn from the Wales summer tour due to increasing commitments at the region.

Wilson was named an assistant to Robin McBryde for the two-Test tour of Samoa and Tonga, last December and was due to depart in June.

However, following the announcement that Rugby General Manager Billy Millard will leave the region at the end of the season, Wilson has opted to focus his attention on the Blues.

In light of the departure, Wilson plans to implement a number of changes in a minor restructuring of the rugby department at Cardiff Blues and believes matters at the Arms Park must remain his priority.

Wilson said: “With Billy leaving, some adjustments to the rugby department and an increased workload, all of my focus and attention is needed at Cardiff Blues.

“The Blues are my priority and with things slightly changing here I want to remain in Cardiff to ensure we are best prepared for pre-season, the 2017-18 season itself and beyond.

“I am very grateful to the Welsh Rugby Union for the opportunity, and their understanding of my decision, and wish Robin and his team all the very best for what will be a tough tour.”

Wales coach Robin McBryde said: "It would have been great to have Danny on tour with us, but we fully appreciate and understand his position.

“It was a tough decision for him to make, but we'd like to thank him for doing so at an early enough juncture for it not to hinder our preparation for the tour. I look forward to working with Danny again in the near future."

Cardiff Blues will be making no further comment at this time.
