Wilson salutes special Munster win

10th September 2016

Danny Wilson has hailed his side's fighting spirit after they claimed a "special win" at Irish Independent Park.

Cardiff Blues led 17-10 at half-time after Tom James claimed his 50th, then 51st, competitive try for the region.

Munster stayed in touch and dominated large periods of the second half but Wales’ Capital Region displayed an abundance of determination.

They trailed going into the final quarter but claimed a stunning counter-attack try in the final 10 minutes to reclaim the advantage and they clung on in a nail-biting finale.

The triumph makes it two from two in the opening weeks of the Guinness PRO12 and Wilson could not be happier with the nine-point return from a possible 10.

He said: “To come here and get a win is special because it’s a very tough place to play. To back up last week with this is outstanding.

“We had a 20 to 30-minute period where we were really under pressure and struggled with their kick-to-compete pressure.

“But we said if we could get them to kick a bit longer we would have space for our exciting back-three players to run back into.

“They kicked longer and we scored two tries from it - one from Matthew Morgan’s bit of foot work and Tom James’ second in the first half.”

It was a complete 23-man performance, with several replacements making a significant impact after some of the starting XV emptied the tank.

That was typified when a tiring front-row was replaced and a crucial penalty was earned.

And Wilson, who is focussed on building strength in depth, was thrilled with the squad effort.

He continued: “The set-piece was pretty solid with exception of a couple of ropey scrums in the middle of the game but we brought a fresh front row on and they won a penalty we kicked and to do all that here is really pleasing.

“We have built a squad that has a strong bench if we can keep everyone fit. We had 17 internationals in the match-day 23 and when you can bring guys like Lloyd Williams and Matthew Rees, Josh Turnbull, Sam Warburton and so on they will give you an impact.

“We are improving on areas from last season and there was a huge defensive shift during some periods of pressure on our own line.

“For us to come here, score three good tries, be tactically just about right and finish the game out – in the last ten minutes we managed the game really well and kicked the right kicks – is pretty pleasing.

“To come here and get a win is really special and they deserve it.”

Cardiff Blues host Glasgow Warriors at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park in their next Guinness PRO12 encounter and Wilson knows it will be another significant test.

He added: “It’s a great start, two wins but we won’t get ahead of ourselves with a massive game against Glasgow – probably the in-form team in the PRO12 – at home next week.”
