Wilson praise as late show stuns Ulster

28th February 2016

Head Coach Danny Wilson praised his Cardiff Blues for finally wearing down high-flying Ulster Rugby as two late tries saw them claim a 23-13 win in the Guinness PRO12 at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park.

Cardiff Blues returned to winning ways with scores from Rhys Patchell and Aled Summerhill in the final six minutes settling a tight contest.

And Wilson was pleased with the manner in which his players did not let their heads drop or get frustrated after missing out on points earlier in the game.

“We played some good rugby and applied a lot of pressure and had good field position, but although we looked dangerous we struggled to finish,” he admitted.

“There was a time when we were consistently getting into the opposition 22 and not coming away with the points we needed.

“Credit to the boys, they kept going and wore Ulster down. We scored two great tries at the end, especially the second with a great finish after some short passing on the short side. It was a well-deserved win.”

Despite the victory, Wilson believes there is still much more to come from his evolving side.

He added: “We play a certain style on this pitch and you have to; you have to embrace the surface.

“There is no doubt that this group of players loves to play that way and are more than capable of doing that. But you have to learn a second way and our kicking game still needs to get better.

“With this current crop, with our internationals away, in three games we’ve had a number of opportunities and not been able to finish. But what was pleasing was that in the closing stages today we did show a finishing edge.

“I felt we got turned over a little bit too often today too, but that is the risk of playing lots of rugby and not kicking. You have lots of breakdowns and every now and again you are going to get turned over.

“Nick Williams and other big men over the ball caused us a problem. That is a work-on for us. We were excellent last week in that area against Leinster, this week not so good, but I’ve got to be pleased with how hard we worked to get a win.”
