Wilson looks to long-term success at Blues

18th June 2015

New Head Coach Danny Wilson has outlined his long-term aspirations to bring success to Cardiff Blues - and vowed to put the right environment in place to make that a reality.

Wilson is coming to the end of his first week in post after being handed the regional hotseat on a three-year deal.

The former Wales Under-20s Head Coach has revealed he is currently going through a period of ‘assessment and evaluation’ as he puts his backroom team in place and meets his new playing squad.

And speaking to the media for the first time this week, Wilson has called on everyone at Cardiff Blues – from the players to supporters – to come together as one and build for the future.

He said: “I am going through a period of assessment and evaluation, like anyone new in a job, looking at the culture, environment, staff and players of Cardiff Blues.

“This first six months will be about that, seeing what’s good and what needs to stay and be developed upon, and identifying what’s not so good and either needs to go or improve.

“These things don’t happen overnight in any business. We have got to make sure we make the right decisions. Whoever is in this job needs time to make the relevant changes and decisions and three years gives you that.

“It’s a long-term project,” he added. “This year is about getting the cultural environmental stuff right, with the aid of the senior players and staff here. I can’t stress enough this isn’t a ‘me’ thing, this is an ‘us’ thing.

“The culture we want to create is one of working hard for each other and making sure we are technically and tactically extremely astute and know our roles and responsibilities on and off the field.

“We ran quite a tight ship when I was at the U20s and I know speaking to the senior players that’s something they want here.

“All of this will hopefully develop a culture that will enable us to climb the league. We have to improve results as soon as we possibly can, there’s no doubt about that.

“Cardiff Blues should not be a tenth-placed team, we all know that. Our ultimate goal has to be get back into the top table of European rugby. That is something we will do as soon as we possibly can.”
