Williams sets new professional appearance record in Benetton clash

First Team News | 17th February 2023

Lloyd Williams will break Taufa’ao Filise’s appearance record as Cardiff welcome Benetton Rugby to the Arms Park on Saturday (KO 5.15pm).

The scrum half, who came through the club’s academy system, will make his 256th Cardiff appearance, over-taking Tongan prop Filise as the most capped Blue and Blacks player of the professional era.

The Welsh international nine forms a half back partnership with Jarrod Evans as BKT United Rugby Championship action returns to the Arms Park for the first time since early January.

Max Llewellyn makes a comeback after two months on the sidelines with an ankle injury and links up with Rey Lee-Lo in midfield. A back three of Ben Thomas, Owen Lane and Jason Harries completes the backline.

Corey Domachowski, Kristian Dacey and Dmitri Arhip are named in a new-look front row, but Lopeti Timani and Seb Davies continue their partnership at lock.

Josh Turnbull will captain the side and is joined in the back row by Ellis Jenkins and James Ratti.

Cardiff director of rugby, Dai Young said: “It’s great to be back here at the Arms Park, and we are all determined to get back to winning ways. The season is going to go right down to the wire and every game is of huge importance.

“We have been disappointed with our recent performances and need to get back to the levels of performance we saw earlier this season to turn things around.

“Despite missing the internationals, we have still been able to select a strong squad to get the job done but we will not underestimate our opposition.

“Benetton are a quality team, full of talent, and they taught us a harsh lesson at the end of last season so there is no lack of motivation.

“It’s also important that we mark a special day for Lloyd in winning fashion. Not many players have the ability to break records like Lloyd and he should be really proud of this latest milestone as he passes Fa’ao.

“It is testament to not only his quality as a player but his professionalism in everything he does - he is a great example and role model for young players.”

On the bench, front row duo Kirby Myhill and Brad Thyer are set to take a step closer to a century of club appearances.

Saturday’s clash will be in association with the Cardiff Rugby Community Foundation as the annual Regional Club’s Day takes place, with the players donning socks in the colour of their boyhood clubs.
