Lloyd Williams is desperate to build on Cardiff Blues’ opening day Challenge Cup victory as they prepare to welcome Stade Francais to Newport on Sunday.
It was a winning start to the European campaign for John Mulvihill’s men against Newcastle Falcons last week, and they will look to make it two from two as the Top 14 giants visit Rodney Parade.
The scrum half is aware that aspects of the performance needs improvement but he hopes that his side can build momentum throughout the festive fixtures.
“It was a really good result for us but there’s still small parts of our performance that we must improve on,” said the Welsh international.
“As players we’ll be aware of what needs to be done, but it’s nice to start the competition with a victory.
“The forwards played a really effective and direct game, and that’s exactly what was needed on the night.
“Our kicking game worked effectively, and that helped us to put the pressure on in their half.
“Unfortunately we haven’t had great results with the Blues in recent weeks, but there are elements of the performances that we can be happy with.
“We just need momentum now, and hopefully this win over Newcastle will kick start that for us.
“We’re fully focused on our own game and if we are to improve it’s vital that we look after our own house.
“We’ll turn up this week knowing that Stade are a strong side with a lot of good individuals.
“Like every team in this competition, it’s important that we play and perform well and hopefully the results will follow.”
Williams was called into the Wales squad over the autumn campaign for the first time in four years, and impressed as he added three caps to his name.
The academy product was delgihted to be back in the national set-up and is relishing the competition for the number nine jersey with both club and country.
“Personally I really enjoyed the experience and it was nice to be back in the squad,” added Williams.
“We were disappointed with some of the results but there were elements of the performances that were good and it gives us something to build on as we head into the Six Nations.
“For me, I know there’s a lot of competition for the scrum half position, with both region and country.
“But myself and Tomos are working hard throughout the week. It’s a good battle between us and something that both of us enjoy.
“Hopefully that competitiveness can continue and benefit everyone.”
