We must carry momentum from Ospreys win into next season insists Navidi

Josh Navidi believes Cardiff Blues can use momentum from Sunday’s final day 29-20 win over Ospreys as they prepare for the short turnaround ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

The Wales international made his first appearance since the restart, captaining his side, who achieved their first double over Ospreys since 2005/06.

The back row was delighted that his side managed to carry their work from the training ground into the matchday in Newport, and insists they must aim to consistently hit those performance levels next season.

Navidi said: “For my first game back, the lungs were certainly going but it was a good performance from us.

“We spoke about wanting to play a simple game and we brought an intensity throughout the week.

“I felt that’s how we also started the match and carried it on throughout the game.

“We want to win week-in, week-out and keep our performances to a standard.

“We need to keep working on what we can improve but we can look back on Sunday as a big positive before the season starts in a few weeks time.”

The Guinness Man of the Match on Sunday was Jason Tovey, who returned to his former home at Rodney Parade to rack up 19 points in a faultless display from the tee.

He was pleased to see a zip in his side’s play as they managed to bounce back from the defeat against Scarlets a week earlier.

The outside half added: “It was down to the attitude. In defence the boys were absolutely flying into them while in attack we were running with more conviction.

“We were taking our opportunities when they came and we didn’t do that against Scarlets.

“We said that would be our main goal this week and managed to do just that.

“It’s a bit different to play at Rodney Parade with no crowd. It’s a bit louder there usually.

“I’ve played at that ground for 10 or 11 years, so I know every blade of grass on it. Luckily that came to good value on Sunday.”
