Victory gives us a building block for the season - Lane

First Team News | 1st February 2022

Owen Lane is confident Cardiff can build momentum following their dramatic win over Leinster on Saturday.

Jarrod Evans’ last gasp penalty ensured victory for the Blue and Blacks, their first since October due to a number of well-documented disruptions to the calendar.

Lane was delighted to give the electric Arms Park crowd a reason to cheer upon their return to the stands as Dai Young’s side overcame the defending champions.

“You can’t underestimate the difference the crowd makes here. You could see that at the end when we were celebrating on the pitch,” said the international wing.

“They gave us a hell of a lift and we definitely felt the energy. We thrived off that, got a good performance and got the win.

“Leinster are quality opposition who have played outstanding rugby over the last few weeks.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game, and it was. Every time we scored, they’d come back and score another try.

“They put us under the pump but luckily Jarrod had the legs at the end to get us over the finish line.

“It’s the type of win that can change the season and hopefully we can build on the momentum of that performance.

“We’ve said that we want to challenge ourselves against the best sides in the league. Leinster are one of those teams and we’ve come out on top.

“The last few weeks, you look at the performance against Quins, which was really positive. We almost snuck away a win there and we beat Leinster this week.

“We’ve over the moon, with a week off coming up, so hopefully we’ll come back in and build towards success.”

Lane scored a crucial first half score, latching onto Evans’ kick-pass and racing away for a trademark finish in the corner.

Lane revealed that the score, which took the wing’s tally to seven for the season and four in the last three outings, was produced after identifying how they could break down the men from Dublin.

The Welsh international added: “We’d spoken during the week about there being an opportunity to kick into space.

“So Jarrod came around the corner and I clocked him with my hand. We saw the space was there and I just pinned my ears back and luckily I got over the line.

“I think Hallam was calling for it behind me, but he was too slow so he couldn’t catch me!”
