Cardiff Rugby’s Visually Impaired (VI) team is back in action for 2025, and have launched a recruitment drive to grow the squad.
The VI team – the first and only of its kind in Wales – has grown from strength to strength in recent years and are proof that rugby is a game for all.
They train every Wednesday in the Spring and Summer, kicking off tonight (March 19) and provide a fun, inclusive and supportive environment for those with visual impairments to enjoy touch rugby as well as an active social scene at the Arms Park.
Whether the individuals new to rugby or have played before, the sessions provide a fantastic opportunity to get involved, meet new people, and stay active.
Cardiff Rugby Inclusion Officer, Craig Enticott said: “Our VI rugby team continues to grow each year, and it’s brilliant to see the impact it has on players, both on and off the field.
“Studies have found more than 75% of people with visual impairments experience isolation or loneliness so this is a great way to meet others experiencing similar challenges, to enjoy rugby, get active and also build friendships at the club.
“Rugby is a sport for everyone, and our VI team is a perfect example of how inclusive and accessible it can be. We’d love to welcome new players to come and give it a go – no experience is necessary, just a willingness to get involved and have fun!”
Gareth Davies, who was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa and was registered Blind nine years ago has been a member of the Cardiff Rugby Visually Impaired team since its inception.
He added: “If you or someone you know has a sight loss condition or if you’re an ally of blind a partially sighted people come and join the team.
“It’s an excellent opportunity to develop your fitness, meet new people and play touch and walking rugby on Cardiff Arms Park in a really friendly and inclusive environment. The team trains every Wednesday 5:30pm-6:30pm but we also enjoy games and festivals throughout the summer.”
