Varsity Cup Match to be Played at Arms Park

5th April 2007

Every year Cardiff University and Swansea University compete for the Welsh Varsity Trophy.

The Welsh Varsity match is second only in size to the Oxford and Cambridge game, and this year's spectacle will be held at Cardiff Arms Park 25th April 2007. You can buy tickets online at www.cardiffstudents.com/varsity or in person at the Cardiff Students Union Box Office.

This will be the 13th meeting of the two teams with Swansea enjoying the lion’s share of victories winning the match 10 times, drawing once and losing only twice. However, Cardiff University are the current holders of the Trophy after winning 15 - 5 at Bridgend Brewery Field last year.

There will be some familiar Blues faces pulling on the Cardiff jersey - Jamie Roberts, Nick Gill, Tom Isaacs, Aaron Fowler. Isaacs and Fowler are currently part of the highly successful Cardiff Blues Regional Under 20 team. Swansea have the advantage as they have by far the larger number of internationals, regional and semi pro players available to play at Swansea University. Nevertheless, Cardiff University are confident that in front of a large partisan crowd expected to be in excess of 8,000 that they will retain the Varsity trophy. Their Head of Rugby and talisman is ex-Blues prop Martyn Fowler, who has coached the side to both Varsity victories.

All the proceeds from the Varsity clash go to the Welsh Charitable Trust - last year, the event raised over £7,000 for the cause.
