After seven long weeks away, Cardiff finally return to the Arms Park this weekend, and the timing couldn’t feel more significant. With a crucial clash against Ulster on the weekend, and three Christmas derbies to follow in quick succession, the squad now enters what could become one of the defining stretches of their season.

Coach Corniel van Zyl says the squad is energised not only by the return to the Arms Park, but by the return of their Wales internationals after a busy autumn campaign.

“It’s just great to see,” van Zyl said. “Last weekend the internationals needed to take a break after a very, very tough four weeks. We had to give them that break. So it was more about using the squad we had trained with during that time. This week, obviously, the internationals are back. We’ll integrate some of them again, with some starting, and some on the bench. That’s the plan.”

The emotional significance of returning home after nearly seven weeks away is also not lost on the players or coaches, with our last home fixture coming against Edinburgh back on October 25th.

“Look, it’s massive,” van Zyl emphasised. “We pride ourselves on our performances back home, in front of our friends, family and supporters. It’s honestly massive to get the crowd behind us. With these few games coming up, it’s going to be big.”

“As you said, it will be a long block and an important December with the derbies coming up,” van Zyl continued. “It’s about getting the balance right-getting the jersey and going out and performing.”

Saturday’s showdown with Ulster already carried big expectations, but now it also comes with an added layer of celebration. Ben Thomas, Rory Thornton and Keiron Assiratti are all set to make landmark appearances, giving the occasion another emotional significance for teammates and supporters.

There is also intrigue around selection, notably with the news that legendary full-back Leigh Halfpenny is now fit and available for selection after completing his rehabilitation.

“Leigh (Halfpenny) is obviously a well-known player in Wales and around the world,” van Zyl said. “He’s been training for a few weeks now and to be fair to him, he’s doing what he needs to do. We’ll see if he gets the nod this week.”

With squad depth boosted, milestones on the horizon, internationals returning, and the Arms Park ready to welcome its side home again, the stage is set for one of Cardiff’s biggest months of the season so far.
