Corniel van Zyl expressed his pride in the team’s resilience and composure after securing a bonus-point victory over the Dragons to head top of the United Rugby Championship table.

“It’s a derby and you obviously want to get on the better side of it,” said Van Zyl after the final whistle. “We’re happy with the result tonight. It was one we had to grind out, similar to last week, which is pleasing. Maybe not the most entertaining style, but that’s how we grow.”

Cardiff made the perfect start at Rodney Parade, crossing for three tries in the opening quarter to take control of the game early on.

“We put a big emphasis on starting well,” he explained. “Last year against the Dragons we found ourselves 15 points down inside 20 minutes, and even last week against Ulster they scored two quick tries. So we talked about sticking to what we do and getting into the game early. That first try really helped set the tone.”

The victory marked Cardiff’s third win in four matches, leaving Van Zyl pleased with the side’s progress, but mindful that there’s more to come. “We’ll take that any day,” he said. “But we won’t get carried away. We’ll review things on Monday and build again into the weekend. To be honest, our attack wasn’t at its best, which is credit to the Dragons. They defended really well and made it hard to find space. But there’s no concern. We’ll keep working and aim to be sharper next time.”

Van Zyl reserved special praise for several standout performers on the night, including Alex Mann, who was named BKT URC Player of the Match. “Alex Mann was outstanding again,” said Van Zyl. “He’s always on the edge, loves the physical stuff and really prides himself on it, so we’re chuffed for him.”

In the pack, Taulupe Faletau made an impressive return for his first appearance of the season, marking the occasion with an early try that underlined his quality and influence on the field. “There’s a real class in Toby,” said Van Zyl. “He came through well and will only get stronger with each game. He just needs a bit of time to find his full rhythm again, but there are no concerns. He’s durable and more than capable of backing it up week after week.”

While reflecting on his first month in charge, having stepped into the role at the start of the season following Matt Sherratt’s departure, Van Zyl spoke warmly about the spirit within the squad and the privilege of leading the team. “Winning always helps,” he smiled. “But I must say, I love it. It’s a real privilege and honour to represent this club and lead the boys. It’s a happy camp, especially after a derby win.”

Cardiff now turn their attention to the final match of the opening block next weekend, as they welcome Edinburgh to Cardiff Arms Park on Saturday 25th (7:45pm). Van Zyl confirmed that the same group of players is likely to feature again before a well-earned break. “We’re in a healthy position, but the focus stays on the next challenge,” he added. “We’ll take it week by week and keep building.”
