Corniel van Zyl insists preparation and learning have been at the heart of the Blue & Blacks’ build-up to Saturday night’s BKT United Rugby Championship clash with Benetton Rugby at the Arms Park (19:45).
After reflecting on last weekend’s defeat to Exeter Chiefs in the EPCR Challenge Cup, van Zyl insists the focus has quickly shifted to ensuring the squad is ready to respond on home soil.
Cardiff take on the Italians in a crucial encounter as the race for the top eight of the URC intensifies.
“Obviously we were disappointed after the game,” said van Zyl. “But it’s about how you learn from that and adapt in the moment. That’s been a big part of our preparation this week, understanding what happened and making sure we’re ready for what’s coming next.
“As a coaching group, we never select a team just to participate. Every selection is built around going out to do a job. With the schedule we’ve got, rotation is important. It’s impossible to play the same group week after week, but whoever pulls on the jersey this weekend will be ready.
“Benetton are a very competitive team. They’ve got a mix of experienced foreign players and a lot of Italian internationals, so we know exactly how tough this test is going to be. Our preparation has been about making sure we’re accurate, physical and ready to take our opportunities.”
The recent announcement of Wales’ Six Nations squad has also provided a boost, with a number of Cardiff Rugby players rewarded for their form in Blue & Black, underlining the club’s continued contribution at the highest level of the game.
Forwards Keiron Assiratti, Liam Belcher, James Botham and Alex Mann have all been selected, while backs Josh Adams, Mason Grady and Ben Thomas are included in Steve Tandy’s plans. Van Zyl was keen to stress the importance of developing players capable of performing on the international stage.
“It’s always a proud moment for players to be selected,” he added. “As a club, we want to keep improving individuals and giving them opportunities. Part of what we’re building at Cardiff is helping players grow to the point where they can go on and represent their country, so it’s great for the lads who will now do that on the international stage.”
Be there to back the Blue & Blacks under the lights, as we take on Benetton Rugby on Saturday, January 24 (19:45 KO). Secure your tickets now and get behind the team at the Arms Park.
