The New Cardiff Blues Region

9th July 2004

As announced by the Welsh Rugby Union earlier this week the Cardiff Blues region now encompasses the Unitary Authorities of South Powys, Merthyr, Rhondda Cynon Taf, the Vale of Glamorgan and Cardiff.

The new region extends from Builth Wells and Llandrindod Wells in the north to Penarth and Barry in the south. Recognising the need to cover this wider area, the Blues today welcome several new appointments.

Allan Lewis, an experienced coach who has worked extensively in Welsh and English rugby, has been appointed Regional Rugby Co-ordinator. Also appointed to academy and development responsibilities in the region are Justin Burnell, Dale McIntosh and Steve Richards. In addition, Chris Tombs, formerly of Leicester Tigers, has already commenced a new role as academy fitness conditioner.

Chief executive Robert Norster said, “Over recent weeks we have been identifying the needs of the extended region and the appointments we are announcing today reflect the results of that analysis. We extend to all of them our warmest welcome to the regional fold and I am sure that together we will move the Blues’ image and influence forward in the most positive of ways. We are indebted to the assistance we have received from the Welsh Rugby Union, including the Dragons’ Trust, and also a very significant new business partner in Crownford Ltd

On behalf of Crownford Ltd, the managing director, Bradley Williams, said, “As a company we want to offer support in any way we can to develop the young talent throughout the valleys. We are delighted with the 110 per cent encouragement we have experienced with the Blues and now we look forward to a very productive two-way partnership.”
