The great balloon launch

4th October 2005

There were many reasons for juniors to enjoy last weekend’s game against Saracens, not least the result!

The Blues marked the start of the new competition in great style turning in a wonderful performance to help create one of the best atmospheres at the Arms Park for a long time.

Blues fans were already eagerly anticipating their first glimpse of Xavier Rush playing for his new team before the news broke on Friday evening that the Blues had signed fellow All Black and rugby’s first global superstar Jonah Lomu.

What’s more having beaten the Scarlets at home and Glasgow away the Blues were full of confidence and the fans arrived in fine voice.

Before any of the rugby action had begun though the spectators enjoyed an altogether different spectacle as the gun fired on the bmibaby Balloon Race.

Almost a thousand fans young and old, entered the race which marked the opening game of the new Anglo-Welsh competition. All entrants were keen to see the balloons fly and had their fingers crossed that their balloon would travel the furthest so they could win fabulous prizes from bmibaby and Cardiff Blues.

The captains of the junior teams performing at half time, Merthyr and Llanishen Under 8s, joined mascot Bruiser, Dr Bob and bmibaby Marketing Director, David Hodge for the release of the balloons seconds before kick off.

The countdown began and before the players took the field the balloons were away – they flew from the centre of the pitch out of the ground up and away above the Millennium Stadium and in to the evening sky.

If a bmibaby balloon landed in your garden on Saturday night or Sunday morning, make sure you return it as soon as possible to Cardiff Blues, Cardiff Arms Park, Westgate Street, Cardiff, CF 10 1JA so you can collect your fantastic prize.

Winners will be notified by telephone or post.
