The game served a good purpose for us – Sherratt

First Team News | 30th September 2023

Head Coach Matt Sherratt was ‘pleased’ with his side’s performance after their 21-12 pre-season victory over the Scarlets at Cardiff Arms Park last night.

Theo Cabango scored two tries, with the second a brilliant solo effort which saw him beat six Scarlets defenders before touching down and Ellis Jenkins added a third after being driven over by the forwards.

It marked a good start to the Blue and Blacks' pre-season campaign with Sherratt pinpointing a few areas that pleased him with the performance.

“I’m pleased for three reasons really,” said Sherratt. “I challenged the forwards to show some of pre-season physically and rugby wise and I thought we did that. There were some really good efforts.

“We showed a little bit of the work we’ve been doing in pre-season in terms of our attack, and I thought in the first-half our set piece and defence was very good. Overall, the game served a real good purpose for us.

“We said that at half-time that any time that he (Cabango) got the ball we felt that he could score, and you don’t forget that but it was so refreshing to see him back on the ball again.”

Fly-halves Tinus de Beer and Arwell Robson both made their debuts for Cardiff with de Beer starting the game and Robson playing the second-half.

Sherratt was delighted with the performance of both his tens and the multi-dimensional facets of their game.

“What I was very pleased with both of them was they managed the game pretty well in terms of it’s very tempting first game to just go out and chop the ball around, so if we lost a little bit of momentum, we went to a kicking game.

“But more importantly they look like Cardiff fly-halves. They both attack the line well. Tinus first-half showed that’s he’s good at going at the line and then I was really pleased with Arwel as well. Both made a couple of line breaks and I like 10s who are triple threat and can run, pass and kick.”
