Summerhill desperate to finish first block of fixtures on a high

First Team News | 27th November 2020

Cardiff Blues' first block of Guinness PRO14 fixtures comes to an end on Sunday, with Glasgow Warriors the visitors to Rodney Parade, and Aled Summerhill is desperate to head into Europe and the festive derbies on a high.

Results in the opening rounds of action have been a mixed bag for Wales' Capital Region, but they head into Round Eight in fourth place in Conference B and remain very much in the race for a top three finish.

Summerhill crossed for a try during last week's defeat to defending champions Leinster, which took him to joint-sixth in the region's all-time top try scorers alongside Kristian Dacey.

With an impressive strike rate of 27 tries in 66 appearances, Summerhill feels he's getting back to his best after the long break and is driven by the competition for places within the squad.

"It’s a really big game for us at the end of this block of fixtures, and we want to finish with a win," said the wing.

"We’ve been training well this week, and want to get out there, so hopefully we’ll click and get the victory. I can’t wait now.

"We had a good start to the season, and obviously it’s been tough lately, but we’ve hard some hard away games and we back ourselves in every game.

"We go out to win every game we play but it’s been the small details we’ve not been getting right.

"In attack, we’re not getting much ball at the moment but we’ve been working on that and hopefully this weekend we’ll have more opportunities to attack.

"When we do have the ball we look sharp so it comes down to fine margins I think. We back ourselves at home, even though it’s Rodney Parade at the moment.

"I’m feeling good. It took a while to get back to sharpness after the long break during lockdown, but it’s nice now to have a run of games and starting to feel back to myself.

"I’m feeling sharp again and it’s nice to be back out there with the boys.

"Last week’s try was an easy run in for myself, I suppose, because all the boys had done the hard work on the inside and it was a nice first-phase try. It was nice to get on the scoresheet again.

"I’m getting the opportunities now so I want to keep playing well because I’d still like to play internationally as well. I want to put my best foot better and just improve every time I get onto the pitch.

"It’s brilliant at the moment. You’ve got Josh who is currently away with Wales, the likes of Hallam and Jason as well as the younger boys here.

"We’re all pushing each other and there’s a really good competition. You see that at training but we also get on with each other. If someone is doing something well in training, you want to try and beat it and do just as good.

"It’s making everyone better and hopefully the team will benefit from that."

Glasgow Warriors' head coach is Danny Wilson, who was at the helm at the Arms Park between 2015-2018 and led them to the European Challenge Cup in Bilbao.

Summerhill expects a backlash against a Glasgow side who have only secured a single victory this season and looks forward to a reunion with Wilson.

"Glasgow have had a tough start to the season, but they’re a quality outfit and missing a few international players," added the academy product.

"Danny Wilson, our former coach, is probably getting them revved up wanting to get a win over his former side.

"But the same goes for us - we want a win against him as a coach as well!

"It should be a good game, but we’ll back ourselves and are looking forward to the game on the weekend.

"Danny is a top class coach, as was Matt Sherratt. During their time here, a lot of youngster had a lot of opportunities which is the same as now.

"We had memories at Bilbao and winning the Challenge Cup, which was great, and he’s obviously a brilliant coach.

"I’m sure the Glasgow boys will be ready for the weekend, and it will be a good game."
