The Sport.Cardiff Roadshow kicked off at Channel View Leisure Centre last week with over 30 children experiencing a week’s rugby activity, which included skill development, tag games and many skills awards.

The event which is was just one of three activities which Sport.Cardiff had organised for the children of Cardiff last week. The other courses that were taking place were being co-ordinated by Cardiff City FC and Glamorgan Cricket Club, both of which were also hailed as a great success.

At Channel View leisure centre proceedings were being overseen by Mike Morgan, an Accredited Cardiff Council and WRU Coach, Liam Scott – who has have undertaken his NVQ studies at the Glan Hafren Rugby Academy under the mentoring of Gary Knowles, and Aaron Fowler, a member of the Cardiff Blues U18 Regional Squad.

Gruff Rees, the Cardiff Council and Capital Rugby Officer, who co-ordinated the scheme, said, “This week has been a huge success for all the people involved and more importantly the children who have been in attendance. What has also delighted me is the presence of Franklyn Parris of CIACS RFC. Franklyn has been actively recruiting potential players for his U10 / U11 sides which will run from Channel View leisure centre next season. This is just the type of motivation and experience that these children need.”

For the children’s efforts over the course of the week they were given a Capital Rugby certificate and further resentations were also made by Paul Jenkins, Chief Marketing & Tourism Officer for Cardiff Council, which included Sport.Cardiff T-Shirts, Balls and free entry vouchers to a Cardiff Blues match for the forthcoming 2004-2005 season.

As the children were put through their paces in coaching sessions, Brecon Carreg Natural Mineral Water was on hand to make sure that everyone kept their cool. As the photo shows the youngsters were pleased to take a break and have a refreshing drink.

The opportunity to be involved in these summer activities, whatever the sport, is the essential message – enjoying regular sport combined with eating and drinking properly is vital to staying healthy.

The Sport.Cardiff Roadshow will continue on August 9 – 13th at both Western and Star Leisure Centres. For more information on these activities and further rugby development opportunities, such as the CIACS U10 / U11 teams, contact Gruff on 07976 056154.
