Stephens can get crowd on the edge of their seats - Sherratt

First Team News | 16th May 2024

Matt Sherratt believes Iwan Stephens has all the attributes to get the Arms Park crowd on their feet.

The Blue and Blacks announced the signing of the former England age-grade star from Newcastle Falcons earlier this week.

He will link up with Cardiff ahead of next season, and is the son of former Wales fly-half Colin Stephens.

Sherratt said: “A few weeks ago talking about recruitment generally I said, 'Does he fit the model of a Cardiff player?'

“Pretty quickly, you probably see from the Iwan highlights that were on social media, he's an exciting player and he reminds you of a Matthew Morgan, probably a Theo Cabango, a similar type of winger.

“He’s not the biggest in stature, but he's got really good feet. I can tell from looking at his footage as well, he's got a bit of a rugby league background.

“He's got some of the softer skills as well. He holds his feet well at the back of shape and scans pretty well, and he can link.

“He's going to be a good asset for us. He's certainly somebody, in broken play, if he gets a ball, he'll get the Arms Park on the edge of their seats.”

Sherratt also revealed, the club have a number of other players targeted, who could be signed and announced within a matter of weeks.

He added: “We've still not got absolute clarity on our budget. So until we get that, we're going to hold off, but we're not late to the market really. The market seems to be happening a little bit later due to the World Cup and just the way the game is at the moment."
