Skills day proves a hit with the girls

4th January 2012

Girls from across the region take part in Girls Skills Day

Girls from Gwernyfed in the North of the region, to Gilfach Goch in central and capital sides Pencoed Phoenix and Cardiff Quins took part in a recent skills session. They were also joined by guest sides from the Dragons region Garndiffaith and Newport HSOB. Nearly 90 girls participated in various skill work stations which were both generic and fun.

The aim of these stations was to introduce the players to skills such as; handling, rucking, continuity of play, fitness, tackling and decision making. These were delivered by coaches from the blues region, and several development officers were on hand to help and support when necessary.

A session at each work station lasted for 20 minutes, this allowed development to take place at the pace of each group. Progression was good throughout each station and girls of various standards learnt techniques that would be invaluable within the game situation, coaches from each team were also encouraged to watch the skills sessions.

At the conclusion of the skills session and after a short rest from the eventful morning activities, all the girls who attended where divided in to four teams that played in a round robin event with all the teams playing against each other. This provided an opportunity for all girls to put their new skills in to practice.

The skills day finished with the girls being able to watch the senior Blues ladies play against the Ospreys in the final game of regional matches. This allowed the girls see at first hand what they have to aspire to, and hopefully surpass in the future, to make the Blues region the best in Wales.

This was the first skills day of the season and there is an additional skills day being planned for the New Year.
