Shingler released to take up French opportunity

First Team News | 8th March 2019

Cardiff Blues can confirm Steve Shingler has been released from his contract to take up a short-term deal with Mont de Marsan in France.

The fly-half, who has made 60 appearances over the last three seasons at Cardiff Arms Park, was due to come out of contract in May.

However, with Gareth Anscombe and Jarrod Evans regularly wearing the number 10 jersey at Wales’ Capital Region, opportunities have been limited for the 27-year-old.

He joins the French outfit in search of increased game time and with the best wishes of everyone at Cardiff Blues.

Cardiff Blues head coach John Mulvihill said: “I would like to thank Steve for all of his efforts since I have been here. He has been nothing but professional, is a good club man and very popular in our environment but he is desperate to play regular rugby.

“With Gareth Anscombe and Jarrod Evans vying for the number 10 jersey and performing so well, he has not had that opportunity. He was out of contract at the end of the season and wants to put himself in the shop window.

“It is only fair that we allow him to do that and we wish him the best of luck for his move to France and the remainder of his career.”

Shingler made 10 appearances for the Blues this season, most recently, last month against Connacht. During his three campaigns In the capital he racked up 301 points.
