Schools Fly Capital Rugby Flag

4th July 2005

As the curtain falls on another season of the Capital Rugby schools development programme, there was just time for one more success for Cardiff and the Vale junior rugby.

Five schools competed in the Selwyn Wyatt Trophy in Calne, Wiltshire, and of those representatives, Ysgol Melin Gruffydd, Bryn Dri, Pen-y-Garth and Sully qualified to play out an all Cardiff and Vale semi-final.

A total of 11 schools competed, with Pen-y-Garth being crowned eventual winners, however the strength of the scheme is highlighted with the four semi-finalists all being Capital Rugby schools.

Captial Rugby Development Officer John Huw Williams said,

"We are very pleased to take this opportunity to spread our wings and taking part in this tournament is all about the chance to build bridges with our colleagues across the border.

“The young players really enjoyed coming across the Severn today to take part in this competition. It’s been an exciting day for everyone and we are grateful to have this chance to play these schools.”

"We will be inviting the English schools we have played against to send representatives to our own annual TAG festival at the Arms Park next year and as the scheme continues to spread its wings, we will also make sure teams from the north of the Blues region will be in attendance.”

The Capital Rugby team have already been inundated with registration forms for the new season and they were only distributed last Thursday.

Forms have been sent to well over 100 schools across Cardiff and the Vale, with priority given to those who have been most pro-active recently with regards to taking part in regular festivals and our annual event.
