The Welsh Rugby Union will review options for reforming the Premiership ahead of the 2009/10 season. The stated aim is to develop the links between the Premiership clubs, first division clubs, the academies and regions to benefit the Wales team.

“We must engage as many voices as possible in this crucially important debate,” said WRU boss Roger Lewis.

“Talent already flows through the Premiership into the regions and in the future we want to make sure that continues and develops.

“There are powerful arguments for both a 12- or 14-strong Premiership and we have to be sure all the issues are resolved before we move forward.

“By starting the review now we will give everyone involved the chance to fully prepare and plan their involvement in the Premiership of the future.
