On the eve of the big 6 Nations clash between Wales and England, South Powys Schools U11’s and Pontypridd Schools U11’s Rugby took part in their very own Wales V England fixture at the Brewery Field Bridgend.

The teams were two of only four invited by former Wales and British Lions legend JJ Williams to play in a 7-a-side curtain raiser at the Brewery Field before the Wales Ex Internationals V England Ex Internationals Tsunami Appeal Fund Raiser match.

Both teams were honoured to be invited to such a special event and be part of an occasion involving players like World Cup Winner and most capped prop forward Jason Leonard, world leading international point scorer Neil Jenkins and British Lion and Wales hero Rob Howley.

The South Powys boys played two games in front of a packed Brewery Field crowd, losing their first match against Pontypridd Schools and during the half time interval of the senior game, played and gained an excellent win against Maesteg Schools U11’s therefore winning the Plate Competition.

A presentation was made by Rob Howley to the all the players and a lap of honour by all four teams involved on the night received a standing ovation from the crowd, showing their obvious appreciation of the skills the young players displayed that evening.

The players then meet all the ex-International players afterwards at a special post match buffet with one particular South Powys player, Cellan Harries, gaining a souvenir to treasure for a lifetime even though I don’t think they will ever fit him… Jason Leonard’s shorts!

The Wales Ex Internationals V England Ex Internationals raised over £23,000 for the Asian Tsunami Appeal.
