Mulvihill pleased with early season performance against Dragons A

First Team News | 10th September 2019

John Mulvihill was pleased with his side’s performance in the thrilling victory over Dragons A on Saturday.

The Celtic Cup clash saw a number of senior squad members making their first appearances of the season, as Wales’ Capital Region secured maximum points against their east Wales rivals.

The hosts scored six tries in total, with scrum-half Lewis Jones grabbing a brace in a stand-out performance.

The head coach was encouraged by his side's set piece and was delighted to see the Summerfest crowd enjoying an entertaining afternoon of rugby at the Arms Park.

“For the first hit out for a lot of these boys, I think they did really well,” said the Australian.

“We spoke about getting 25 bodies moving on the day, and we’ll bring some more boys in against Bedford on Saturday.

“It’s good to come out of the game with a fit bill of health and no injuries.

"There was some exciting rugby played on both sides of the ball but there’s plenty to work on as well.

"Lewis Jones was really good, and he’s had a really good pre-season under his belt, was a spark out there against Dragons and deserved his couple of tries.

"I thought our scrum and line-out were pretty good, and we certainly put them under a lot of pressure in the second half, and we need to keep building our strength in depth in that front five.

"A lot of people came down to Cardiff Arms Park to look at the new jersey and celebrate Cardiff Blues getting started again.

"They watched the Wales v Ireland game, which led into our fixture, and it was good to see people sticking around to enjoy the game."

While Cardiff Blues A take on their Ospreys counterparts at Brewery Field on Friday evening, there is a first official hit out for the senior side on Saturday as they travel to take on Mike Rayer's Bedford Blues in a pre-season encounter.

There will also be a opposed training session against Bath Rugby on Tuesday, and Mulvihill is pleased to see preparations on-track ahead of the first Guinness PRO14 encounter against Isuzu Southern Kings on September 28.

Mulvihill added: "We’ll have some of our senior players coming back so it’s about introducing them back into games after training over the last few weeks.

"We want to bring them back together and get them up to game-speed, and a lot of the boys involved last weekend will be playing in Bedford as well.

"We’ll see some heading into the A team for their game against Ospreys as well, but a lot of the senior boys will feature in Bedford as we lead into a good preparation ahead of the Kings.

"We’ve also got a live session against Bath on Tuesday and we’re looking forward to welcoming them here, before we travel up to Bedford on Friday.

"It will be controlled in what we do against Bath, but both teams have their competitions starting soon so we’ll be moving into that contact phase."
